SA Rugby and the Motor Accident Commission promote road safety at the International Rugby Sevens Adelaide
SA Rugby has teamed up with the Motor Accident Commission to promote two important road safety messages at the International Rugby Sevens Adelaide and South Australian community rugby events. The International Rugby Sevens, held at Adelaide Oval 3-5 April, is now established as one of South Australia’s premier international events attracting over 32,000 spectators in 2008, including three thousand visitors from interstate and overseas. The road safety campaign will focus on pedestrian safety and drink driving.
In the last five years, about one in every nine road fatalities are pedestrians in South Australia. In addition to fatalities there are on average 120 pedestrians seriously injured and 389 who receive minor injuries each year. Drink driving is a major cause of crashes resulting in injury and death on South Australian roads. Research shows that from 2002 to 2006 there were almost 700 drivers and motorcycle riders killed or seriously injured who were above the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit.
These two campaigns will be delivered via television commercials, signage, posters, branded plastic cups and public announcements at the International Rugby Sevens as well as posters throughout SA Rugby Clubs and local hotels. SA Rugby CEO, Lachlan Clark said “The South Australian rugby community, like a lot of communities in the State, have been affected by the tragedy of accidents on our roads. We are therefore very proud to be able to partner with the Motor Accident Commission on this important initiative.”
