U14 State Representative Report

Gold Coast Tour 2009 Sept 25th – 28th

The Under 14 Representative side sponsored by ‘SA Quality Home Improvements’ & ‘Heavy Air’ travelled to the Gold Coast to take on two rep sides over the course of the weekend. Players from seven Rugby Union Clubs throughout South Australia made up the travelling squad of twenty two team members. Players were selected following trials held in the North and South of Adelaide, which culminated in a North versus South Final Trial Game. Twenty five players, including three standby players, then attended Sunday morning training sessions held at Southern Suburbs Rugby Club & Vikings Rugby Club. Players were introduced to a professional code of conduct, dress code and written game plan. Training sessions included visits from special guests such as members of the Thunderbirds to discuss life as a professional athlete and a sports nutritionist to discuss the importance of good nutrition and hydration. It was one of the key goals of the Coaching/Management group to instil within the boys the necessary values and behaviours required to be part of professional sports team and highlight to them the importance of conditioning and nutrition. This foundation will benefit the talented young players as they work towards the Under 16 National Championships, Black Falcons honours and in their general life outside of rugby.

The tour ended with an end of trip function at SA Rugby to present the following awards and watch the games on the big screen. I would like to take this opportunity to thank SA Rugby for giving me the opportunity to coach a talented group of young players, my Team Manager Warren Healey for his fantastic administration and organisation of the trip, Assistant Coach Tim Sumner and Team Trainers Sue Doggett and Kate Denley for their efforts on match day and during training. The trip was a fantastic experience and I’m sure everyone involved with take away some fond memories.
