Background

SA Rugby has facilitated an academy program for the past five years. The program has experienced some great success, not only raising the competitiveness of the Junior State Representative Teams in South Australia, but also having a number of athletes offered a higher level of rugby elsewhere.

Chris Seuteni (Academy member for the past three years) recently played for the Brumbies reserve side against the Australian U20’s

Willem Zwaan (Academy member last year) was selected into the southern States Schoolboys team to play in the national schoolboys championship.

The main aim of the academy over the years has been to prepare the athletes to be at the best of their potential prior to competing in the National U16’s and National Schoolboys Championships. These Championships are a fundamental part of elite player pathway within Australia.

SA Rugby views the program as essential to develop our Junior players in South Australia. Whilst the program has achieved its aim over the past five years, we feel that limiting the numbers has lead to certain individuals missing out. These individuals could possibly benefit from the extra coaching and conditioning provided on the program.

2010 Program

Moving forward we are intending to expand the current program to three zones, catering for 25 athletes in each zone. The program is aimed at the U17 age group for the 2010 season, therefore anyone who is Under 17 (over 15) on 1st January 2010 will be considered (born in 1993 or 1994). The program therefore covering second year U16’s and first year Schoolboys. By providing the program for this age group, it allows the athletes to compete against each other whilst still playing within a two year age window.
