Rugby Union is proving that South Australia is not only an AFL state, with thanks to our development programs:

SAPSASA Walla Sevens Tournaments

As part of the South Australian Rugby Union Pathway, SA Rugby conducts a series of regionalised Walla Rugby Sevens Tournaments for Primary schools within the SAPSASA framework between weeks 5 and 8 of Term 1 each year.

The program is available to Primary Schools in 10 SAPSASA zones across the Adelaide metropolitan area, with each Junior Club hosting a one day tournament for the schools in their area.

Walla Rugby Sevens Tournaments are designed as a safe non-contact introduction to the game which allow children the opportunity to use the ball by combining the skills of passing, catching and running to learn the game elements of ball take, scrums and lineouts.
Prizes are presented at each tournament to individuals who demonstrate the values of Rugby such as Pride, Fair play and Sportsmanship.

Walla Sevens State Championships

Should a school team/teams be among the top three at a Regional Walla Sevens Tournament they will be invited to attend the Walla Sevens State Championships.

The State Championships were held at Adelaide Oval in the week leading up to the International Rugby Sevens which took place in Adelaide on the 7-8 April 2007. Participating students have the opportunity to play against the best schools in the state and interact with some of the world’s best Sevens players.

In the boys competition in 2007 Parkside Primary went on to become State champions defeating St Peters Woodland and Willunga were very impressive against Burnside to wint the Championships for the girls.

SAPSASA Talent Identification Program

SA Rugby talent scouts attend each of the regionalised SAPSASA Walla Sevens Tournament's.Should a child be identified as having potential in the game of Rugby and is currently playing for a South Australian club, they will be invited to a series of training days where they will learn the safety aspects and skills of tackle Rugby.

Upon commencement of training, two seven-a-side teams are selected to compete in the South Australian Junior Sevens Championships against club teams from across the State on 28th April, 2007.

Children participating in this tournament each receive a certificate and a polo shirt to commemorate their achievements.

Kick-Start Program

The purpose of the SAPSASA program is to expose children to the Game of Rugby and the Kick-Start program allows them to sample the game in a safe and supportive environment.

This program gives these children an opportunity to become a member of their local club and learn the unique game elements of tackle Rugby.

Children who attend 6 pre-season training sessions and register with a club will receive a free kit which includes a ball, cap, backpack, water bottle, posters and stickers. Details of the program in your area are on the back cover.
