This year’s Under 15 side was made up of a number of last year’s Under 14’s who toured the Gold Coast along with some new players picked from their involvement in the Under 16 trials. The squad travelled over by bus and spent the first night as a group at Melbourne Discovery Group Accommodation after having a training session in the country town of Nhil on the way across. The squad were given the opportunity to visit the MCG and the National Sports Museum on the Friday before being billeted by Victorian families for two nights. The squad stayed as a group again on the last night of the tour where they visited the Crown Entertainment Complex for movies, arcades and ten pin bowling.
The standard of rugby played over the three days was very high, with both teams displaying well organised structures and game plans. All three games were won and lost in the last 20 minutes as we were unable to maintain the high intensity we set in the first half to counteract the size difference in our Islander counterparts. It is pleasing to see that 6 squad members will also form the base of this year’s Under 14 squad and will have another opportunity in the Under 15’s squad next year.
Many thanks must go to Victorian Rugby Union for facilitating the games and the brilliant hospitality we received. It was also great to see so many South Australian parents travel across to the support the squad. The trip went like clockwork in an professional manner thanks to the dedication of the coaching & management team. We look forward to hosting Victoria next year in return fixtures.
